Don Stafford has lived and worked in Rotorua for many years and is an authority on its history and, in particular, the Arawa people of the region. His previous books include Te Arawa: A History of the Arawa People (1967) and the two-volume series Landmarks of Te Arawa (1994). Stafford was awarded the MBE in 1982, and in 1993 received the CBE as well as an honorary doctorate from the Universtiy of Waikato.
